Students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) have termed the death of a fellow student killed in a road accident involving a car in the 300 Feet area of Purbachal, Rupganj, Narayanganj, a murder, also presenting a six-point charter of demands, including ensuring the maximum punishment for those involved.
During a press briefing at the Palashi intersection on Friday, they described the incident and voiced their demands, after the death of Buet computer engineering student Motasim Masud, 22, earlier in the day.
The crash left two of his classmates, Amit Saha, 22, and Mehedi Hasan, 21, injured as well.
The protesting Buet students claimed that Sadman, the son of a retired senior army officer, drove recklessly while intoxicated., killing Motasim.
Quoting the injured Amit, they said the trio stopped their motorbike and were speaking with police after being signalled to pull over.
At that moment, Sadman, intoxicated and driving at high speed, collided with them, they alleged.
The students also accused the driver’s family of leveraging their influence to manipulate the case and even prevent it from being filed.
They reiterated that clear evidence confirmed the accused was drunk and driving recklessly.
Calling for justice, the students said they demand a fair trial for the murder of their friend.
Their six demands are: Ensure the highest punishment for the person involved; the accused party must bear the full medical expenses of the injured; adequate compensation must be provided to the family of the deceased; legal action should be taken against any attempts to interfere with the investigation; Buet authorities must extend their utmost support to the injured students for their recovery and return to normal life; and the government must take effective measures to ensure road safety and prevent further loss of lives in road accidents.
The accident occurred at around 3am.
Police later took the driver of the vehicle involved in custody.
