What are the key points of July Revolution proclamation?

Sarjis Alam

The leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement are set to announce the "Proclamation of the July Revolution" on Tuesday at 3pm at the Central Shaheed Minar.

To provide details about the contents of the proclamation, the central leaders convened an urgent press conference on Sunday.

At the event, Sarjis Alam, one of the movement's coordinators, elaborated on the matter.

He said: “The reasons and context behind the revolution of 2024 did not develop over just 16 years. This is the culmination of a backdrop spanning 53-54 years, or even 250 years. Over the last 16 years, this context exceeded all limits of oppression, injustice, misuse of power, extortion, hostage-taking, and killings, shattering people's patience entirely.”

Sarjis Alam further said: “After 16 years of repression, a logical movement began with the quota reform protests, which culminated on August 5. This was a revolution—a revolution whose initial phase we have already surpassed.”

The leader of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement added: “The proclamation of the July Revolution should have been announced earlier. However, stabilizing the state’s corrupt system to a certain extent and then attempting reforms proved to be a time-consuming process. The current system is not receiving the expected cooperation from all sectors to effectively move forward.”

Sarjis said: “Over the past 16 years, people have suffered injustices and oppression. Amid this backdrop, people, undeterred by fear of life or bloodshed, took to the streets, leading to the fall of the murderer Hasina. There were reasons behind their uprising—aspirations, dreams, and a spirit that resonated with every individual. The essence of this spirit, the expectations from the July Revolution, and the collective aspirations of the people of Bangladesh need to be documented.

"This proclamation will serve as a written charter for the entire nation, embodying our new dreams, rejecting the old systems, and paving the way for the realization of the systems we aspire to create,” he said.

He added: “The proclamation will delineate the distinctions between the unacceptable elements of the past and the system people desire in the future. It will serve as a guideline for those who assume responsibility through elections. We have already drafted the proclamation and are incorporating opinions from everyone involved in the revolution, regardless of political affiliation, to refine it.

"Just as this revolution united all anti-fascist forces, we believe the proclamation will embody everyone’s hopes and aspirations, serving as the manifesto for a new Bangladesh,” Sarjis said.
