Asif Mahmud, adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, has issued a stern warning against any acts of treason or interference with the country’s sovereignty, saying that such actions would not be tolerated.
He also emphasized the importance of communal harmony in Bangladesh, ensuring that no community faces persecution due to its identity.
Speaking at a winter clothing distribution event in Pirgacha, Rangpur, on Tuesday, Mahmud said that the government is committed to safeguarding the nation’s unity and security.
"We want a Bangladesh where no community faces persecution because of its identity. We are committed to ensuring communal harmony. However, any act of treason or threat to the sovereignty of the country will be dealt with strictly," he said.
He further said that the government would take tough action against anyone attempting to destabilize the country. Referring to recent attempts to create unrest, Mahmud did not name Chinmoy Krishna Das Brichari, a spokesperson for the Jagoron Mancha, but mentioned that certain individuals were trying to provoke instability following an arrest.
"Anyone involved in acts of treason, regardless of their position, will face the law. National security is our priority," he added.
Mahmud also highlighted the efforts of certain groups to incite conflict among communities, noting a failed attempt to stir chaos in the capital by promising a loan of one thousand crore taka. He praised law enforcement agencies and students for their swift response to the situation. The leader of the peaceful uprising has since been arrested and is undergoing interrogation.
On the development front, Mahmud assured that progress would be made in coordination with all divisions, including Rangpur. Regarding Union Parishads, he mentioned that alternative arrangements would be made in phases.
During the event, Mahmud announced a financial aid of 30 lakh taka for the families of martyrs and assured them of lifelong support. He also pledged to provide employment opportunities and improved healthcare for the families of the injured.
Mahmud distributed winter clothes to over 600 families during the event. He later attended a similar distribution ceremony in Kaunia Upazila.
At the event, the widows of the martyrs from the anti-discrimination student movement, including Rahima Begum (wife of Shahid Manju Mia), Azgar Ali (father of Shahid Mamun Mia), and Rani Begum (wife of Shahid Saiful Islam), shared their emotional reflections.
