Former National Board of Revenue (NBR) officer Matiur Rahman, who made headlines after his son purchased a goat for Tk 1.5 million, has been arrested with his wife, former upazila chairman Laila Kaniz, in Dhaka.
The couple was apprehended from the Bashundhara residential area on Tuesday night (January 14), Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman said.
But it remains unclear in which case the couple has been arrested.
Just before last year’s Eid-ul-Azha, a video surfaced on social media showing Matiur’s son Mushfiqur Rahman Ifat purchasing a goat for Tk 1.5 million (approximately $14,000).
The extravagant purchase quickly went viral, raising questions about the source of such a large sum of money and sparking widespread public outrage.
In the wake of the incident, allegations of corruption against Matiur gained traction, prompting authorities to take action. The Ministry of Public Administration retired Matiur on July 31.
