Elon Musk has tweeted about Tulip Siddiq, who resigned as the UK’s anti-corruption minister after being accused of corruption.
“The Labour minister for child welfare shields the predators and their anti-corruption minister is corrupt,” the billionaire posted on Twitter on January 15, retweeting a post of Mario Nawfal.
Tulip stepped down from Keir Starmer’s cabinet on Tuesday (January 14) as Bangladesh investigates her and her family members—mother Sheikh Rehana, aunt Sheikh Hasina and siblings—for corruption.
Her role as Treasury economic secretary included tackling corruption in the UK’s financial markets. She has been named in an investigation into claims her family embezzled up to £3.9bn from infrastructure spending in Bangladesh.
Tulip resigned, saying her position had become a distraction, hours after reports that the Bangladesh authorities filed a criminal case against her, accusing her of misusing her position as an MP to gain influence and illegally acquire land with her aunt, deposed prime minister Hasina.
Tulip has been accused of helping to broker a deal with Russia in 2013 that overinflated the price of a new nuclear power plant in Bangladesh. The deal allegedly inflated the price of the plant by £1bn and 30 percent of it was distributed to Tulip and other family members via a complex network of banks and overseas companies.
