Hasnat Abdullah calls on govt to issue July uprising declaration by Jan 15

Jan

Hasnat Abdullah, convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has called on the government to issue its declaration of the July uprising to be issued by January 15.

The student leader made the appeal during his speech at the movement’s March for Unity program at the Shaheed Minar in Dhaka on Tuesday evening.

Hasnat said: “We currently do not have a declaration for the July Uprising. I want to say the declaration must be issued by January 15. Until then, you have to visit people in districts and different neighbourhoods, listen to what they have to say, and gather their input for the declaration.”

“Our struggle against fascism and the Awami League will continue. We will meet again on January 15 with the declaration,” he added.

At the beginning of his speech, Hasnat referenced the one-point declaration announced on August 3 and said: “From this very Shaheed Minar, we announced the one-point demand. Many could not accept our uprising. As a result, conspiracies were carried out in the Secretariat and the police.”

“To those conspiring against us in the Secretariat, I say: accept reality. In this country, there will be no rehabilitation of the killer Hasina. Over the past 16 years, this fascist government suppressed every political party and taken away the people's right to vote,” he added.

Hasnat said: “The people took to the streets at our call during the July uprising. We forced Hasina to flee. We want to tell this government that law and order have not yet been restored, nor have essential goods’ prices been brought under control. What is your job? You must control the prices of goods and restore law and order.”

He further said: “If any revolutionary is attacked, this government must bear full responsibility. It has been so long, yet extrajudicial killings have not been brought to justice. The Pilkhana massacre’s trial must be ensured without further delay.”

“In the post-August 5 Bangladesh, we have no other enemies. Our only enemy is the Awami League. Our struggle against the Awami League will continue,” Hasnat added.

The March for Unity program by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement began at around 4pm at the Shaheed Minar with a moment of silence in honour of the martyrs of the July uprising.

The gathering at the Shaheed Minar had been announced as part of preparations to release a proclamation of the July uprising by the movement.

However, after the interim government announced plans to issue the declaration of the July uprising late on Tuesday, the student movement revised its plans.
