The government will prioritize supporting local livestock producers over allowing meat imports, said Farida Akhtar, adviser to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.
Her remarks came during the Annual Research Review Workshop held at the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) in Savar on Sunday to evaluate recently completed research outcomes.
“Although foreign countries are interested in exporting meat to Bangladesh due to the domestic demand, we will prioritize those involved in local production and livestock farming,” Farida Akhtar said.
She explained that some countries rely on industrial farming and subsidies to make their products competitive in foreign markets. While Bangladesh has become a potential destination for such exports, the government remains committed to fostering domestic production to meet the local demand for affordable beef and other meats.
“There is significant interest from foreign exporters and local importers alike. However, our focus is on empowering local producers rather than treating meat imports as a business opportunity. Strengthening the domestic sector is essential for ensuring food security and sustainable development,” she added.
She also emphasized the need for closer engagement with district-level officials and stakeholders to understand and address the specific challenges faced by local producers. “If we meet their needs effectively, we can ensure there is no shortage of meat in the country,” she said.
The workshop, chaired by BLRI Director General Dr Shakila Faruque, featured presentations of 35 research papers across six sessions. Key attendees included: Prof Dr AK Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan, vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University; ATM Mustafa Kamal, additional secretary, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock; Dr Mohammad Rayazul Haque, director general, Directorate of Animal Resources, university faculty members, researchers, livestock experts, farmers, and senior officials from the ministry and directorate also participated in the event.
