DU VC calls to keep national days above politics

Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan

Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan on Saturday called for keeping national days above politics, saying that understanding the uprisings of 1971 and 1990 is essential to comprehend the struggles of the people.

He emphasized that remembering the sacrifices of the intellectuals is a way to pay the blood debt. It is the responsibility of the current generation to pass on the history of the intellectuals’ sacrifices to future generations.

Speaking at a discussion meeting organized on the occasion of Martyred Intellectuals Day, he made these remarks in his presidential speech.

Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan said that to repay the blood debt of the martyrs, all sections of society should carry out their duties with the utmost sincerity.

He said that this could be the minimum way to repay the blood debt of the martyrs. Among the major events that define our nationalism and national identity, Martyred Intellectuals Day is one of them.

"Without independence, we would not have had any positions, dignity, or honor. The nation needs to understand the level of sacrifice it took to achieve the country," he added.

He said: "The family members and relatives of the martyrs must feel the pain of their sacrifices in their hearts. To understand the significance of the 24th student uprising, one must know the historical sequence of events. Dhaka University has always been vocal against all injustice, oppression, and discrimination. At every critical juncture of the country, this institution has stood beside the nation."

He added: "Following the legacy of 1971, in 2024, young people have again stood by the nation and accomplished the impossible. Sayed and Mugdho, continuing the legacy of 1971, gave their lives for the country in 2024. Understanding the significance of these historical events, a national consensus must be built on this matter. He requested everyone’s cooperation in quickly identifying the graves of the martyrs on the university campus."
