Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain has emphasized the necessity of national unity over party politics to safeguard Bangladesh's interests in international relations.

He urged future political leaders to prioritize broad consensus on foreign policy issues.

Speaking at a national dialogue organized by the "Forum for Bangladesh Studies" at Krishibid Institute on Saturday evening, Touhid said: “I hope those elected to power in the future will lead the country through consensus, especially on matters tied to national interests.”

He criticized the absence of unity in policymaking over the last five decades, adding: “In many countries, unity in national interest is a priority, but we haven’t seen it in the past 53 years. Often, governments pursued their own agendas without engaging the opposition, and even when governments proposed beneficial measures to improve foreign relations, opposition parties refused to support them. This cycle of political division needs to end.”

Touhid called for discussions between opposing political parties on matters of national interest and warned against unilateral decisions in foreign relations.

He stressed the importance of maintaining balanced ties with key global powers, including India, China, and the United States.

“Bangladesh has vital interests with all these nations. This balance is critical as we chart our foreign policy course,” he added.

Reflecting on the dialogue's theme, "Unity, Reforms, and Elections," Touhid underscored the significance of collective national efforts.

He reminded the audience of the unity displayed during the 1971 Liberation War, which was instrumental in achieving Bangladesh's independence.

Touhid also emphasized the importance of political accountability, urging citizens to hold political parties to democratic principles. “The people must ensure that political parties remain true to the democratic values they represent,” he said.
