Road Transport and Bridges Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan has said that if the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) fails to improve its operations, the government will consider shutting it down.

He made this statement after visiting the BRTA building and attending a road safety discussion at the conference room on Saturday.

Earlier, on December 19, following a discussion at the Electricity Bhaban in the capital, the road adviser gave the BRTA one month to improve its conditions.

“Although some progress was made, it has not yet reached an acceptable level,” said Adviser Fouzul Kabir Khan.

He said: "BRTA officials have been clearly told that their behaviour is unacceptable. I have also pointed out that various government departments have been dissolved. If there is no improvement in performance, we will consider shutting down BRTA."

The adviser added: "We will continue monitoring BRTA closely. The drive against unfit vehicles is ongoing and will be intensified."

Addressing the increase in road accidents, he said: "There has been a 12% rise in road accidents from last year to this year. Since we assumed responsibility as an interim government, we have not been able to reduce road accidents, and I take responsibility for that."

Fouzul Kabir Khan also said: "While life is priceless, we are taking responsibility for road accident victims. We have instructed BRTA and relevant authorities to provide compensation to those killed or injured in road accidents as per the law."
