20-year-old patient Sarah Islam was the organ donor
Shamima Akter, a recipient of a kidney from brain-dead patient Sarah Islam, died at the capital's Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Tuesday night.
With this, both of Sarah Islam's kidney recipients died.
A 20-year-old patient Sarah Islam was the organ donor. She was suffering from various health complications, including a brain tumour.
When doctors realized Sarah's condition was deteriorating to a brain-dead state, her mother gave permission to transplant Sarah's kidneys and corneas.
Doctors transplanted both of her kidneys, and corneas, according to media reports.
On January 18, 2023, Sarah's two kidneys and two corneas were transplanted into the bodies of four people.
The recipients of the kidneys were two female patients in their 30s, who are recovering well after the surgery.
Shamima underwent a kidney transplant at BSMMU. The rest of the kidney was transplanted into the body of another patient named Hasina Akhtar at the private Kidney Foundation.
Earlier no organ transplant was done in the country from a person who was declared dead.
However, eight months after the kidney transplant, Hasina died while undergoing treatment at the Kidney Foundation. Shamima died a year after the transplant.
