Students of Jagannath University (JnU) withdrew their hunger strike on Monday night after receiving a revised letter from the Ministry of Education, which addressed their three demands, including the transfer of the second campus project to the army, before announcing that a shutdown program would begin on the campus on Tuesday.
At around 7pm, a revised letter from the Ministry of Education was sent to the protesting students in front of the Secretariat.
After reading the letter, the students were satisfied and ended their strike.
Faisal Murad, a student of the Management Studies Department, said: "The letter signed by the Ministry has arrived, and we can see a ray of hope.
“They mentioned that the work will be transferred to the army by Wednesday, the approval for the steel-based structures of Bani Bhaban and Habibur Rahman Hall will be given, and discussions will be held regarding the accommodation issues."
AKM Rakib, a student of the Department of Botany, said: "Since two of our three demands have been accepted, we are withdrawing the hunger strike. However, until the decision from the meeting on Wednesday, the shutdown program will continue from tomorrow, 8am.”
All classes, exams, and administrative activities of the university will be affected by this program, he added.
Meanwhile, Rois Uddin, general secretary of the JnU Teachers' Association, said: "We have received the revised letter. This is the result of our students' movement."
