Sarjis Alam, a coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has stepped down from his position at the July Shaheed Smrity Foundation.
In a post on his verified Facebook profile on Wednesday morning, Sarjis announced his resignation, mentioning: “I am no longer the general secretary of the July Shaheed Smrity Foundation. To enhance the foundation’s operations, changes have been made to its constitution, structure, and working processes. From now on, the executive committee will oversee the office’s management, headed by a chief executive officer (CEO). Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdho is currently serving as CEO.”
Sarjis added that a governing body will be responsible for policy-making within the foundation. Its advisors include prominent figures from the ministries of health, social welfare, local government, and ICT, with Professor Muhammad Yunus as the chief advisor.
He emphasized that the post of general secretary has been dissolved following these structural changes.
Reflecting on his tenure, Sarjis wrote: “The foundation began its first financial support program on October 1, and the office officially opened on October 15. I assumed responsibilities as general secretary on October 21 and served until December 31. I resigned afterward, and my signing authority was handed over on January 7, officially concluding my duties.”
During his term, financial support was extended to 628 of the 826 verified martyr families by December 31.
Additionally, approximately 2,000 out of 11,000 verified injured individuals received financial assistance.
Explaining his decision, Sarjis wrote: “I gave my maximum effort and time to the foundation during my tenure. When I realized I could no longer devote the necessary time to its responsibilities, I stepped down. Accepting one’s limitations and relinquishing responsibility when needed is not a sign of weakness but a demonstration of honest courage. I have tried to remain true to my role while in office.”
