Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam speaks at a discussion titled "The Role of Media in Addressing Genocide and Inequality: Accountability and Reform Proposals" at the National Press Club on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.

Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has emphasized the importance of ensuring freedom of expression, urging all to avoid creating a repressive environment.

Speaking at a discussion titled "The Role of Media in Addressing Genocide and Inequality: Accountability and Reform Proposals" at the National Press Club on Wednesday, he said: "For 15-16 years, the Awami League has attempted to silence us by labeling us as Shibir or BNP. Let us not create such an atmosphere. Let us not become fascist in our behavior or take away the voice of another. Every voice should be welcomed; every voice should persist in Bangladesh."

The discussion was organized by the initiative "Media Against Fascism."

Shafiqul Alam highlighted the need to investigate the incidents of enforced disappearances and the controversial actions of various parties.

Referring to the crackdown on Hefazat at Shapla Chattar, he said: "We will investigate these matters according to international standards. From 2009 to 2024, Sheikh Hasina has held numerous press conferences, and every detail of those events is documented. The roles of individuals in each incident should also be recorded. We will invite international journalist rights groups to investigate what kind of journalism has been practiced in the country."

He also criticized the portrayal of students during specific events, saying: "From July 1 to August 5, the way our students were labeled as terrorists on TV should be examined. We will ask international journalist rights groups to investigate where fascist narratives were constructed."

Shafiqul Alam stressed the importance of research to fulfill the responsibilities owed to future generations. He said: "By conducting thorough research, we can document the events and demonstrate to the next generation what really happened."

The press secretary concluded with a call for accountability and reform, underlining the need to ensure that the media operates freely and fairly, free from fascist tendencies.
